  1. Always appreciate what you have — life can change in an instant.
  2. Not very many people wash their hands as they should.
  3. Communication is key, yes, but active listening is the yeast that makes the bread rise if you follow my metaphor.
  4. The value of calm is sometimes unparalleled.
  5. If an entire community is stressed out, ambient stress will affect you too — try to limit trips to stressful places, for example, by getting grocery pickup or delivery.
  6. Being outside sometimes is a basic human need just like food, shelter, and love.
  7. Routine is key. Try to rebuild your old routine — or build a new one — as best you can.
  8. Interacting with pets and houseplants helps fight dissociation, depression and anxiety.
  9. Your friends do want to talk to you. Give them a ring, or hit them up on FaceTime.
  10. Hobbies provide a creative outlet and a place to direct energy when you feel bored out of your mind.
  11. Warm tea and a bubble bath, or your own version of self-care, will help keep your mental health in good shape.
  12. It’s important to take breaks throughout the day, even when you work from home. Get up from your laptop, drink some water, and talk to someone before getting back to work.
  13. When the world feels topsy-turvy, grounding exercises and meditation are a helpful reset.
  14. Paying attention to the signals your body sends you is crucial — that’s the only way it can communicate.
